Shake it Out

Jess Loves Fred Jessica Tran Floral Ao Dai

Sheer robe: Thrifted.
Dress: Random cheap store.
Necklace: Wanderlust + Co
Tan bracelet: Wanderlust + Co
Alligator bracelet: Lovisa
Shoes: ASOS Havoc
Earring: Lovisa
All images shot by: Vinh Pham / Ve Noir Studios.

When I found this robe I had to stand for a while and unscramble my head. When I was younger and went to weddings (my dad's side of the family is Vietnamese), some of my relatives would be wearing a traditional Vietnamese dress thing called an ao dai (Wiki article). I always thought it was the ugliest thing and I remember thinking, NUP, NEVER GOING TO WEAR THAT. And then I found this. I'm not sure whose idea it was to combine sheer and watercolour florals with a traditional Vietnamese costume shape, but I offer the remains of my abandoned Large popcorn chicken to them.

I am so excited for Florence + the Machine's upcoming album "Ceremonials" and Childish Gambino's upcoming debut album "Camp". I've been playing both on repeat and I think it surprises some people when they see me open my mouth and a torrent of rap lyrics come out. I fit the stereotype of somebody who listens to indie/"hip" music like Florence but as soon as I start getting down and ghetto, everyone is all, like, "What just happened".

One of my closest friends, Shirley (director of Thomas & Lola, I've mentioned her countless times before) graduated yesterday from high school. One year ago, I was in her position. It astonishes me daily how quickly time is running away from me - I've barely finished waking up and then all of a sudden I'm about to go to sleep. I just wanted to congratulate everyone graduating from high school, and also wish everyone luck for the upcoming major exams - have a fantastic time moving into the library and entering into relationships with your textbooks.

ooh I love your pink dress and earrings!

I love Florence + the Machine but I would not consider her indie at all. She's actually pretty big. Also, Childish Gambino IS indie/"hip" music especially since it seems like only indie people listen to him. He was Tumblr's boyfriend for awhile before someone lambasted him about rape jokes. eek sorry I sound like a pretentious dick but lol I feel strongly about this. :(

LOL. Dude I know exactly what you mean. Ao dais are hot, sweaty, and whenever I breathe in, the flimsy buttons start popping around my rib cage...
But I'm sure your father is very proud.

Best earring, EVER.

Believe it or not, but when I was younger I used to think skinny jeans were the ugliest thing known to man. True story. How much of an idiot was I?!

Well aren't you going to look the best in your ao dai at the next wedding you go to. Espesh if you wear it with this dress - matches perfectly.

That earring is so pretty, along with the ear it's hanging off. Your jewellery is sick.

Hi, Jess!
First I must express my adoration for that dress (random cheap stores rule;)) and second I have to say it's good to give a second chance to the stuff you considered ugly as a kid. I for example as a grown up have found new love for Serbian national costume, that I wasn't to fond of as kid when it was my performance costume (I was a part of the national folk dance group). It has some funny elements but than again look at this: http://media.photobucket.com/image/srpska%20narodna%20nosnja/kristijankarin/dzube1.jpg
Your robe is awesome :) it's so pretty and delicate and you look like fairy:)
now i shut up!

Have I told you how much I'm in love with your hair, yet?! I'd really like do my hair like that, but alas, I worry about what it would be like if I wanted to grow the shaved part/side out ... potentially awkward looking as it grows, and I wouldn't want to shave my whole head.

Anyway, you look gorgeous, and your outfit is lovely, as well.

Belated thanks for your comment!
